George crumb potato chips8/27/2023 ![]() George was married five various times, along with his wives and children they were also known to assist in working at the family restaurant. George was so successful that within a few years his clientele included prosperous clients. In the restaurant, he includes a complimentary basket of chips on every table. He was able to come up with the capital for the purchase of the restaurant from the profits he made selling the chips. In 1860, George established his own restaurant which was known as “Crum’s House” in Malta, New York. When the chips were presented to the customer he took a bite, he ate a few of the chips before informing them that the chips were delectable, after that historical moment the chip was birthed to the world to be known as the “Saratoga Chip” or “Potato Crunches”. George, then became bitter and felt insulted of his cooking, so he retaliated by cutting the potatoes paper-thin and threw them in a pot of oil and allowed them to cook so hard that they became hard and crispy then towards his bitterness he even added additional salt thinking that the chips would be so terrible that would be inedible for consumption. George made a batch and presented it to the customer who was not pleased stating that they were cut too thickly, so they were sent back to the kitchen to be remade, George attempted to make them thinner but when the customer received the second batch he still complained that he didn’t like them, so he advised George to try again to resolve the issue. The restaurant designated the cooking responsibilities to two staff members, which was George and his sister Catherine who was also known as “Aunt Kate”.ĭuring one of the dinner meals, a customer came into the restaurant and ordered a menu item of Moon’s Fried Potatoes which was a house specialty at the time. It was often catered by various tourists and wealthy residents of the area. Moon Lake House was owned by Cary Moon and recognized as one of the upscale restaurants in the area. He took a position as a cook at Cary Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga. Most residents in his community mainly worked at the resorts, while working at the resort that is how he became familiar and was introduced into the world of culinary. George was very familiar with the area during his childhood so in 1853 he became a trapper(person who traps wild animals) and hunted for wild animals mainly for their fur, he also became an Adirondack hunting guide. George also had a two sisters, Catherine and Mary Crum. George was born in Malta, New York which is located south of Saratoga Springs in New York also recognized as a resort community. His father worked as a jockey, he was known as “Crum” so when George was older he liked the name so much he adopted the name. We believe that his father, Abraham Crum was a free (non-slave) black man and his mother, Diana Tull to be a mixed woman of mulatto (anyone with African ancestry) and black/Native American Indian woman. The idea was to make the potatoes taste awful that they would become inedible.Sometime In 1828 George was born and was given the name George Speck as his birth name, he was born to African American/Native American Indian parents. The third time, Crum, who started to get angry with the annoying customer, did his best to cut the potatoes paper-thin, deep fried them so long that they became hard and crispy, and then salted them heavily. Crum created another batch, thinner this time, but the customer again complained that the thickness weren’t to his liking. ![]() Crum prepared the potatoes and served them as he would normally do but the customer complained that they were incredibly thick. One hot, summer day, a customer stepped into the restaurant and ordered the restaurant’s well known Moon’s Fried Potatoes. ![]() The story dates back to 1853 when George Crum was working as a chef in the Cary Moon, a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. Most people don’t know this but potato chips are yet another accidental invention. ![]()
